Hello Healers!

Elderberry syrup has been a beloved seasonal staple for generations. Tart, sweet, and deeply comforting, it’s one of the easiest herbal preparations to make at home — and perfect to keep on hand as the colder months settle in. Here’s a straightforward, small-batch recipe ideal for a family.

Simple Elderberry Syrup (Small Family Batch)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup dried elderberries

  • 3 cups water

  • 1 cinnamon stick (optional but lovely)

  • 2–3 thin slices of fresh ginger (optional)

  • 1 cup raw honey

Instructions

  1. In a small pot, combine elderberries, water, cinnamon, and ginger.

  2. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat.

  3. Simmer uncovered for 30–40 minutes, or until the liquid reduces by about half.

  4. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly.

  5. Strain through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth, pressing the berries to extract as much syrup as possible.

  6. When the liquid is warm — not hot — stir in the raw honey until fully dissolved.

  7. Transfer to a clean glass jar and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 months.

How to Use

A common traditional amount is:

  • Adults: 1 tablespoon daily

  • Children over 1 year: 1 teaspoon daily

(Honey should never be given to children under one year old.)

This syrup is delicious on its own, but also wonderful stirred into tea, drizzled on yogurt, or mixed with warm water as a cozy tonic.
